De Nood aan Dansen - The Need to Dance
De Nood aan Dansen is een portret van de Vlaams-Marokkaanse choreograaf Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, een van de veelzijdigste en succesvolste danskunstenaars van deze tijd. De documentaire volgt hem terwijl hij kriskras door Europa reist. Terwijl de film hem observeert bij het creëren en performen van zeer verschillende dansstijlen vertelt hij in een monologue interieur over de achtergronden van zijn onstuitbare lust om te scheppen. Als kind van een Marokkaanse vader die moslim was en een katholieke, Vlaamse moeder was het verre van vanzelfsprekend dat hij kunstenaar zou worden.
Bij het imiteren van choreografieën van videoclips van Madonna en Michael Jackson ontdekte Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui dat dans hem een kans bood om zichzelf uit te drukken en zijn problemen te verwerken. Hij koos onvoorwaardelijk voor een leven in de kunst. Het maakte hem gelukkig maar veroorzaakte wel de definitieve breuk met zijn dominante vader. Het opgroeien in twee culturen levert nog steeds een rijke voedingsbron voor de dansstukken die hij maakt.

English synopsis
‘The need to dance’ is the portrait of the Flemish-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, one of the most versatile and successful dance artists of our times. The documentary follows him as he travels all over Europe. As the film observes him creating and performing widely different styles of dance, he talks in an interior monologue about what lies behind his irrepressible urge to dance. As the son of a Moroccan father, a Muslim, and a Roman-Catholic Flemish mother it was anything but obvious
that he would become an artist.
While imitating, as a child, the choreography in video clips by Madonna and Michael Jackson, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui discovered that dance gave him the opportunity to express himself and to cope with his problems. And he made an unconditional choice for a life in the arts. It gave him happiness, but it did cause the definitive break with his dominant father. Growing up in two cultures is still the rich source of the dance pieces he creates.
